Candy Cane Cookies
Here'a a festive treat that combines the sweetness of sugar cookies with the refreshing flavor of peppermint.
- ½ cup shortening
- ½ cup butter or margarine
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 1 egg
- 1½ teaspoons almond extract
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2½ cups all purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon red food coloring
- ½ cup crushed candy canes or peppermint candies mixed with ½ cup granulated sugar
Mix the ingredients for the dough in order given. Divide dough into two equal parts and place in separate bowls. Color one half with the red food coloring. For each cookie, use a one-inch ball of red dough and a one-inch ball of white dough. Roll the balls into strips about four inches long. Carefully twist the two strips together and form into a candy cane shape. Bake at 350° for about 9 minutes, or until the cookies are firm but not browned. Sprinkle the crushed candy cane and sugar mixture over the cookies while they are still warm.
